No software is Defra approved: what the GOV.UK list means
Defra don't approve, recommend or rank any product. They test software and list the providers that pass on GOV.UK, and the list says plainly: “Buying software is at your own risk.”
- Defra
- Doesn't recommend or endorse any product. The list is not exhaustive.
- The list
- Providers whose software passed Defra's tests: 219 rows on 16 October 2026.
- The risk
- You're responsible for making sure the software meets the requirements.
- Byrne
- Listed on GOV.UK as a compatible software provider.
What being on the list does mean
A listed provider's software connects to Defra's Report receipt of waste API and passed Defra's production
approval tests: 14 scenarios it has to handle GOV.UK. That tells you it can send records
Defra will accept. It doesn't tell you the price, whether it suits your site, or who helps when you're stuck.
How to check a provider is on the list
- Open GOV.UK's Report receipt of waste: choose a software provider.
- Search the table for the company or product name. Byrne is “Byrne Digital Solutions”,
product “Byrne Waste Tracking”.
- Look at the “Updated” date: Defra add providers as they pass.
- Ask about exemptions. Some providers have a test exemption, for example for hazardous waste
GOV.UK.
Questions to ask any provider
- Which name are you listed under on GOV.UK?
- Any test exemptions, such as hazardous waste?
- What does it cost, and does it rise with loads, users or sites?
- Does it check each load against Defra's rules, then send it itself?
- Who answers when a load is rejected?
Byrne's answers: £89 per site per month; each load is checked against Defra's rules first, then sent
automatically once you've linked your Defra account; email is the quickest way to reach me, and I reply the same
working day. Consultants see every client site on one screen. Ten questions, side by side.
